What Is Industrial Wastewater Treatment? Physical, Chemical and Biological Stages

Industrial wastewater treatment is the multi-stage process that brings a plant's effluent up to discharge or reuse quality.

Industrial wastewater treatment is the process of passing a plant's production effluent through physical, chemical and biological stages so it meets discharge standards or can be reused in production. The goal is both regulatory compliance and water and resource efficiency.

The physical (mechanical) stage is the first line of defence. Screens capture coarse solids, grit chambers remove sand and gravel, and equalization tanks buffer flow and load fluctuations — protecting downstream units and improving efficiency.

In the chemical stage, processes such as coagulation–flocculation, neutralization and dissolved air flotation (DAF) come into play. They are critical for removing suspended solids, oil-grease and colour, especially in textile, food and chemical sectors.

The biological stage removes dissolved organic pollution (COD/BOD) via microorganisms. Activated sludge, extended aeration and membrane bioreactors (MBR) are selected according to effluent character. The resulting sludge is dewatered and disposed of.
